Work with Katharine Leavitt of Frevitt Ranch

Katharine L. Leavitt, CIA, CGAP

Katharine has several years of paid and volunteer experience preparing taxes in Buffalo. She is actively working toward earning her Enrolled Agent credential, a recognition of proficiency by the IRS that will allow her to represent clients who have to communicate with the IRS.

Katharine, a granddaughter of a chicken rancher, met her future husband in 2018. He was the son of a dairy farmer, and he introduced her to his small goat herd. She and her husband, Lonnie Frericks, dreamed of owning a ranch in WY. However, they knew owning a ranch would involve more than just being stewards of their land and livestock, they would also need to manage the business side of things. To prepare for this, Katharine began learning tax prep in 2019.

In June of 2021, they were able to make their dream come true and moved to Buffalo, WY. There, they tend to their home — Frevitt Ranch — which primarily produces delicious eggs from their free-ranging hens on 45 acres in the high plains/red hills just to the east of Buffalo.

Once in Buffalo, Katharine realized not all local ranchers had a tax professional in-house like her ranch did. She wanted to give back to her new community and began working part-time at a local CPA firm serving these ranchers. During her employment, she was touched by the ranchers’ kindness and dedication. She saw the impact her knowledge was having on the operation of her own home ranch and those of her clients. After leaving the CPA firm, she decided to carve out more time to serve them by helping them understand how, with some documentation, their investments in their ranches could reduce their taxable income. She decided to open this company, providing tax preparation services to her wonderful WY neighbors.

Let Katharine solve that problem for you. She’ll come to your ranch with everything she needs to prepare your taxes. You hand her your documents and answer some questions, and then you go about your day while she works with your documents in your house. After a couple of hours, she’ll be ready to reconvene and discuss your tax return. You sign a form that allows Katharine to file your taxes electronically for you, you pay her, she hands you a hard copy, and you’re done.

Toward the end of the year, Katharine will review your tax year with you, to help prepare for the coming tax season.

Youth Ranch Tax Prep - Remote

Estimated time: 2 hours

Did you sell an animal at Fair and now you have to report your income? Let Katharine help! She will walk you through all the opportunities for deductions to reduce your taxable income legitimately, so you can keep more of your hard-earned money in your pocket! Then you sign a form that allows Katharine to file your taxes electronically for you, you pay her, she sends you an electronic copy of your return, and you’re done!

Why would youth want to report their income? Although the future is uncertain, reporting even small amounts of income can help you become eligible for bigger benefits later, like disability benefits and other Social Security benefits. Did you know that you need 10 years of income to be eligible, and that benefits are based on 35 years of income? That’s a lot of years!

Tax Deductions Consultation

Estimated time: 2 hours

Let’s talk about your ranch operation so Katharine can offer suggestions on where you could be missing deductions and some tips on how to document your income and expenses. Taxes can be complicated and maybe a little scary. Katharine will explain everything you want to know in plain English, help you decide how to document your expenses and investments, and will help you legitimately minimize your tax burden. Let’s keep your money here, in Wyoming!
